Limit of 10 characters for an objectname is more than 30 years old, time to increase

IBM allows procedure-names with more than 10 characters for the name of the procedure.

For a Service-program-name (and for all other objects on the IBM i) only 10 characters are allowed.

In my company we have thousands of Service-programs because we have a multi-layer-system in development.
Thsi doesn't make sense. IBM should increase the length of the object-names on IBM i.

Thank you for submitting your idea. You have presented a strong use case for why extending program names beyond 10 characters would be a great improvement. And while we don?t disagree with your request, the impacts to the operating system to make such a pervasive change are far reaching, and would likely be difficult (if not impossible?) to make without at least some level of incompatibility to existing applications. Even if we were to scope it to program names, it would have impacts to not only compilers and program stack, but PTF support, message handling, auditing, journaling, common object support in librarian, security, save/restore?etc.

I?m afraid the cost and risk involved to deliver such function far outweigh the value/benefits. Therefore I am declining your request.

The CAAC has reviewed this IBM Idea and recommends that IBM view this as a high priority Idea that is important to be addressed.

Since this is foundational to the operation system if will be a major undertaking, but it is necessary for the future of the box.

Background: The COMMON Americas Advisory Council (CAAC) members have a broad range of experience in working with small and medium-sized IBM i customers. CAAC has a key role in working with IBM i development to help assess the value and impact of individual IBM Ideas on the broader IBM i community and has therefore reviewed your Idea.
