By default, DLTIMGCLG uses KEEP(*YES) to keep images that are part of an image catalog when one is deleted. WRKIMGCLG, on the other hand, offers a 4 Delete option that deletes the images without prompting. At the very least this should work the same as DLTIMGCLG and use that command default.

I have good news for you, what you are asking for is the default behavior in IBM i 7.4 & 7.5.
Using WRKIMGCLG option 4 to delete an image catalog will now bring up a confirmation screen which gives you the option to keep the image catalog entries if you wish.
