The Language Server Protocol (LSP) was created by Microsoft in 2016 as an open-source protocol for use between source code editors or integrated development environments (IDEs) and servers that provide programming language-specific features like code completion, syntax highlighting and marking of warnings and errors, as well as refactoring routines. The protocol was inspired by the VS Code language API and was expanded with more language features. The protocol is backed with JSON-RPC for remote invocation due to its simplicity and existing libraries.
An RPGLE language server could potentially support many extensions in a variety of current and future code editors and IDEs. An RPGLE language server should be considered in addition to or in place of a standalone VS Code extension (IBMI-I-2445) by developing just one implementation to support a language for all IDEs.
