NULL management by IWS

Currently IWS has no capability regards to null values when a SOAP or REST service is published. When a field in a request is null, the RPG ile program or procedure will receive:

For char fields -> all blanks

For varchar fields -> a lenght of zero

For numeric fields -> a value of zero

So if a null value is passed in or an element is omitted, IWS sets character to blank. We should have an option which allows the program to receive null value (i.e. %nullind(fld1) = *on;) instead of blank.

The CAAC has reviewed this IBM Idea and recommends that IBM view this as a high priority Idea that is important to be addressed.

If IWS is going to be a viable option for webservices then it needs to handle nulls.

Background: The COMMON Americas Advisory Council (CAAC) members have a broad range of experience in working with small and medium-sized IBM i customers. CAAC has a key role in working with IBM i development to help assess the value and impact of individual IBM Ideas on the broader IBM i community and has therefore reviewed your Idea.
