IBM Power Ideas Portal

This portal is to open public enhancement requests against IBM Power Systems products, including IBM i. To view all of your ideas submitted to IBM, create and manage groups of Ideas, or create an idea explicitly set to be either visible by all (public) or visible only to you and IBM (private), use the IBM Unified Ideas Portal (https://ideas.ibm.com).

Shape the future of IBM!

We invite you to shape the future of IBM, including product roadmaps, by submitting ideas that matter to you the most. Here's how it works:

Search existing ideas

Start by searching and reviewing ideas and requests to enhance a product or service. Take a look at ideas others have posted, and add a comment, vote, or subscribe to updates on them if they matter to you. If you can't find what you are looking for,

Post your ideas
  1. Post an idea.

  2. Get feedback from the IBM team and other customers to refine your idea.

  3. Follow the idea through the IBM Ideas process.

NX- And In-Core-Acceleration To Achieve Energy-Efficient Quantum-Safe Encryption For IBM i

This request is for activating in-core- or/and nested acceleration to support the advertised quantum-safe encryption also for IBM i.
Other methods (as described below) are neither fast enough nor a simple solution for customers who use cloud or only a few instances.

Among encrypted protocols, a specific example for this request is a more effective tape encryption.
Encrypting data with BRMS currently increases the CPU workload, latencies and backup duration.
Although, IBM advertises quantum-safe encryption by using POWER nested or in-core acceleration
(for AIX it can be activated via the acfo-command), it is nowhere documented that IBM i OS supports it.
No option seems to decide, whether the NX or the in-core variant is used.

Only for BRMS the even more promising encryption offloading to tape drives can be used, but requires a Tape-Library-Key-Management,
which would need a dedicated infrastructure of 2 servers minimum (which should be isolated and closely integrated to protected the keys).
On the other hand, an application-controlled key-management is not available within BRMS (as provided
by IBM Spectrum Protect and as requested in https://ibm-power-systems.ideas.ibm.com/ideas/IBMI-I-3203 ).
However, with a cloud infrastructure all data (not only backup) needs to be transferred using encrypted-protocols.

If the nx- and in-core-acceleration is already provided for IBM i, this request concerns only its documentation.

The CEAC has reviewed this requirement and recommends that IBM view this as a HIGH priority requirement that is important to address. IBM i should be able to exploit hardware features of Power10 to provide efficient Quantum safe encryption.

Background: The COMMON Europe Advisory Council (CEAC) members have a broad range of experience in working with small and medium-sized IBM i customers. CEAC has a crucial role in working with IBM i development to help assess the value and impact of individual RFEs on the broader IBM i community and has therefore reviewed your RFE.

To find out how CEAC help to shape the future of IBM i, see CEAC @ ibm.biz/BdYSYj and the article "The Five Hottest IBM i RFEs Of The Quarter" at ibm.biz/BdYSZT
