Rational Developer for i Backspace & Paste behavior in Replace mode

While in Replace mode(Insert key toggle in US) editing a source member, using the Paste function shifts characters following the block to the right while the expected behavior would be to replace a corresponding volume of characters. While in Insert mode, it makes sense to shift the following characters to the right. Current workaround of selecting the characters to be replaced regardless of mode requires double work and increases potential for keying errors.

Also, current keyboard function puts Backspace key in destructive mode (characters to the right of the cursor are shifted left for each press of Backspace key) with no ability to control the function. Suggest either providing a Preference option to control(preferred) or have behavior change base on Insert/Replace mode.

Use Case:

Paste based on Insert mode:
1. Select one or more characters to copy/cut.
2. Press Ctrl+C or X to copy or cut.
3. Relocate cursor to destination.
4. a. While in Replace mode, Ctrl+V will paste over corresponding characters selected in step 2( new function for Paste ).
4. b. While in Insert mode, Ctrl+V will insert corresponding characters in step 2( existing function for Paste ).

Backspace control:
1. When Preference setting is turned on, Backspace key is non-destructive preventing characters to the right from shifting with the cursor (new behavior).
2. When Preference setting is turned off, Backspace key is destructive overwriting character under the cursor and shifting remainder of the line left as the cursor moves (existing behavior).

@IBM_Rational_Developer What text field at the bottom of the editor? With a default RSE perspective, the only thing I would consider a text field is the Commands Log view.

Thank you for taking the time to suggest this enhancement to our product. The source in the editor could be overlaid by selecting Edit -> Selected -> Overlay with selection (Alt + Z) after using block selection (Alt+L, Alt+B, Alt+R). You may open two editors side-by-side to do the copy from. Please open a separate RFE if overlay with clipboard is needed.
To change the key action of Backspace, you may enter "set keyAction.backspace left" in the text field at the bottom of the editor, or add Key-backspace Action-left to the user key actions list in Windows -> Preferences -> Lpex Editor -> User Key Actions to make it permanent.
