Functional improvement request

Hi.

This is not a suggestion but a request for functional improvement.

In the combination of ACS 1.1.8.5 or later + Java8, there is a problem that the popup icon is not displayed when ACS is started.

I have heard that this problem has been resolved in Java 9 or later, but I would like to have it supported in Java 8 as well.

best regards

Thank you for submitting your Idea to enhance IBM i Access Client Solutions (ACS). The change in behavior for displaying the startup splash screen occurred when we switched from using our own implementation to use Java?s built-in support. Using Java?s built-in support provides several advantages including being displayed much sooner while the Java Virtual Machine (JVM) is still being initialized. The disadvantage is that Java?s native API does not support it in Java 8. However, if you were to start ACS using ?java -jar acsbundle.jar? from the command line, you will see the splash screen when starting ACS even when using Java 8. We do not have plans to support our previous implementation of showing the splash screen.

Why the reason for keep using Java8? It's quite old and replaced with several later versions.

You could install a newer Java version next to ACS start program and have ACS run using that, while having another Java version globally and used for other applications.

Here is a clip from the IBM Support page Java Options for IBM i Access Client Solutions:

IBM i ACS can also directly define the Java runtime to be used by the acslaunch program. One of the benefits of this approach is that this allows IBM i ACS to use a Java runtime that may not be available to the entire client workstation. There are also several ways to do this and here are a couple:
    • Place the Java JRE folder next to the acslaunch program that is being used.
    • Add a -vm statement to the acslaunch program call. This can even be used if IBM i ACS install_acs script has been used to create desktop icons, the properties of the desktop icon can be modified so that the Target: syntax is updated to pass this. Here is a syntax example:

      - Access Client Solutions icon Target: C:\Users\user\IBM\ClientSolutions\Start_Programs\Windows _x86-64\acslaunch_win-64.exe -vm C:\OpenJDK8\jdk87172-bll
      - ACS Session Mgr icon Target: C:\Users\user\IBM\ClientSolutions\Start_Programs\Windows _x86-64\acslaunch_win-64.exe -vm C:\OpenJDK8\jdk87172-bll /plugin=sm
