Add ability to use any RPG variable in an embedded SQL statement, including those that come from Qualified Dimensioned data structures

Programmers would benefit by not seeing the error - Variable :BLAH is not usable for reason X when writing exec SQL select statement in an RPG program. Some variables are allowed and some are not, but it is not always clear why this basic select does NOT work, while a fetch does work?

If you're trying to retrieve a whole table or a lot of records into an array, why is FETCH required?

The RPG compiler could suggest a way to avoid this error in the Error information (option1) or better still, all syntaxes  should be allowable to make this possible.

Thank you.

Example below:

  dcl-ds  Array_data EXTNAME('EMPS') qualified DIM(1000) ;

  end-ds;

 exec sql select * into :Array_data from emps;

SQL0312: Position 29 Variable ARRAY_DATA not defined or not usable for reason code 22. Reason 22 says: 22 -- The host structure is a dimensioned array.

    IBM does not intend to provide a solution to this Idea at this time, so it is being closed.

    We recognize that there are many situations where the precompiler does not support RPG variables. We consider each request individually, and have made many changes over the years to extend the use of RPG variables in SQL statements.

    This specific request asks to have a SELECT INTO statement return multiple rows and assign them to an RPG array, similar to how a FETCH statement works. This goes against the SQL standard definition of how SELECT INTO should work. While we understand the ease of use associated with this Idea, we are committed to aligning with the standard so this request is being declined.
