IBM Power Ideas Portal

This portal is to open public enhancement requests against IBM Power Systems products, including IBM i. To view all of your ideas submitted to IBM, create and manage groups of Ideas, or create an idea explicitly set to be either visible by all (public) or visible only to you and IBM (private), use the IBM Unified Ideas Portal (https://ideas.ibm.com).

Shape the future of IBM!

We invite you to shape the future of IBM, including product roadmaps, by submitting ideas that matter to you the most. Here's how it works:

Search existing ideas

Start by searching and reviewing ideas and requests to enhance a product or service. Take a look at ideas others have posted, and add a comment, vote, or subscribe to updates on them if they matter to you. If you can't find what you are looking for,

Post your ideas
  1. Post an idea.

  2. Get feedback from the IBM team and other customers to refine your idea.

  3. Follow the idea through the IBM Ideas process.

Concurrent BRMS save of the same media would result in false BRM148A

Previous i had raised the issue in IBM-i-3268. Occassionally when there happen to be
multiple BRMS Save job happening BRMS would give a false BRM148A due to volume assignment contention.

Although the idea is delivered, we still have the rare occurence of this issue happening randomly across various partitions at time.

Multiple/Parrallel BRMS save jobs with the same media policy would result in BRM148A [IBMI-I-3268]

    Hi,

I had previously open a few cases with regards to BRM148A, With the latest case TS015881626,i was told by the support that BRMS save cannot be run at the same time and such concurrency has to be handled by application.
So in the event of reported reoccurance , do i open a new case to report the false BRM148A or is there any particular logs or loggins that would be helpful to work on the rca ?

Thank you for the response, the BRMS team has been unable to reproduce the customer described scenario with concurrent jobs which produces a false BRM148A error. The team has done detailed code reviews of the volume selection algorithm which has not uncovered a false error reporting leg. Unfortunately, without an exact recreate we cannot have confidence in a change to the volume selection process that would address the reported problem area. Therefore this request is being closed and noted as a defect that should be handled as such if it occurs again in the future. Development will work with the support team to try to provide additional improved tracing in the future to identify gaps in the volume selection process that might help identify these random issues.

    Hi Support,

1)There are more than enough tape drives than the parrallel backup jobs running at any point of time.

2)There are sufficient media on the partitions as immediate reply to the BRM148A would allow to go thru.

3)There are no parrallel resources in use for the save.

The BRMS development team would like to request additional information about this environment to better understand the issues. Given the information that several concurrent parallel jobs may be running across multiple LPARs and this occurs infrequently, does the current environment always have enough tape drives and volumes required to support the maximum possible jobs? How many parallel resources are being requested for the backups and how many LPARs are involved?

The BRMS team has received the requirement and is evaluating it. The BRMS team will provide a response after evaluation is complete.

    Hi Maria,

I have a support raised the case thru TS015532477.

However, the IBM support does not think that this is a bug and recommend to open a idea.

Myself and our BRMS development team has tried our best to explain the reason why this is happening and confirmed that this is
NOT BRMS BUG but just a rare timing issue. However, it appears that neither you are ready to accept findings from the development team nor you are willing to make any change to your backup process. If you still think BRMS needs some kind of enhancements, I would recommend to raise a request for enhancements (RFE), (now known as IBM ideas) using following URL.

The CAAC has reviewed this IBM Idea and recommends that IBM not implement this request. This is a bug and should be reported to IBM Support.

Background: The COMMON Americas Advisory Council (CAAC) members have a broad range of experience in working with small and medium-sized IBM i customers. CAAC has a key role in working with IBM i development to help assess the value and impact of individual IBM Ideas on the broader IBM i community and has therefore reviewed your Idea.
