SRCSTMF parameter for CRTDSPF

As we are using more and more modern ways and tools to develop our software, it really hurts that one has to copy DDS sources to a member in a temporary source physical file in order to be able to create a display file.

I’m pretty sure that it wouldn’t hurt anybody if CRTDSPF gets a SRCSTMF parameter.

I know, 5250 is old, but as a matter of fact many shops are sitting on a big bunch of these and can’t get rid of them easily. And for some jobs, this interface is still a very productive one. And some users even love it.

So even when we devops, we will still have to create display files for a couple of years. And this copying is really a pain in the you know where.

So I – and I think a lot of other people, too – would really appreciate a SRCSTMF parameter for the CRTDSPF command.

It’s not repeating the “investment protection error”, it’s making developer’s life easier.

The same arguments would work for other DDS source types, e.g. PF (CRTPF), LF (CRTLF), PRTF (CRTPRTF) etc.

So if this idea is implemented, it should cover all DDS source types, IMHO.

Meanwhile, you could use the excellent CRTFRMSTMF command by Brian Garland - it has existed for many years now and support ALL sources types, not just DDS. I've been using it for years, and it works great.

    Best regards,

The CAAC has reviewed this IBM Idea and recommends that IBM view this as a medium priority Idea that should be addressed.

Device files are going to be around longer than we'd like, they should be brought into the Git process like other sources.

Background: The COMMON Americas Advisory Council (CAAC) members have a broad range of experience in working with small and medium-sized IBM i customers. CAAC has a key role in working with IBM i development to help assess the value and impact of individual IBM Ideas on the broader IBM i community and has therefore reviewed your Idea.
