IBM i ACS Data transfer should use type GRAPHIC instead of CHAR

We are using the "Data transfer" tool in IBM i Access Client Solutions to import data from Excel.

In the dialogue "Create IBM i Database File" we use the "Start Scan" Button to determine the data layout of the spreadsheet which should be imported. On the next screen we can see the determined Fields and Types. Here I have two suggestions:

  • Double click on a line should open the "Details" screen for the selected field

  • When the scan mechanism checks that the field content has characters that can not be saved in EBCIDC 37 oder 273 then it should use GRAPHIC with CCSID 13488 (UCS-2) instead of CHAR.

    We have added the ability to be able to double-click to view the scan results. This will be in our next update which will be available in August 2024. The other request to use GRAPHIC instead of CHAR is not planned.

    Thank you for submitting your Idea to enhance IBM i Access Client Solutions (ACS). Bringing up the Detail panel on double-click would be a nice usability improvement we?ll add in a future update. As far as your other request, the scanner makes the best guess it can within its defined parameters. All results need human verification and there will always be some percentage that need adjustments. Adding additional verifications to the scanner so that it can make a better guess would adversely affect performance on large files. There are no changes planned.
