IBM Power Ideas Portal

This portal is to open public enhancement requests against IBM Power Systems products, including IBM i. To view all of your ideas submitted to IBM, create and manage groups of Ideas, or create an idea explicitly set to be either visible by all (public) or visible only to you and IBM (private), use the IBM Unified Ideas Portal (https://ideas.ibm.com).

Improve ARE (Administration Runtime Expert) Scheduler to allow a SysAdmin to Manage the ARE Tasks

We find ARE  (Administration Runtime Expert) to be a fantastically useful Tool for monitoring and fixing IBM i Systems.

Currently IBM ARE has it's own job scheduler to allow you to run templates automatically, which is ideal  However, the ARE scheduler is totally Opaque, you cannot see what jobs are running or scheduled to run or who scheduled them to run.

There is a further restriction that the ARE job scheduler needs to be manually started after IPL, Save 21 or restart of it's web service, which means that it is all to easy to for ARE tasks to stop running on a system.  It would help to know what ARE templates are running or scheduled to run.

My idea  is to allow a SysAdmin to monitor and manage all ARE tasks on an given system and for any ARE submitted tasks to automatically start with a system after IPL, Save21 or restart of WebService.

The CEAC has reviewed this requirement and recommends that IBM view this as a HIGH priority requirement that is important to address. Discussion point were that ARE should be restarted with web services - but that it would still require a central view for all tasks that individual users have scheduled .

Background: The COMMON Europe Advisory Council (CEAC) members have a broad range of experience in working with small and medium-sized IBM i customers. CEAC has a crucial role in working with IBM i development to help assess the value and impact of individual RFEs on the broader IBM i community and has therefore reviewed your RFE.

To find out how CEAC help to shape the future of IBM i, see CEAC @ https://comeur.org/what-is-ceac/ .

Thanks for your input. We can see the benefit of this enhancement. IBM will use this Idea as input to planning, but no commitment is made or implied. This Idea will be updated in the future if IBM implements it. IBM will use votes and comments from others in the community to help prioritize this Idea.
