IBM DB2 SQL Table: Database Manger Identity / Duplicate Key

Change SQL to support unique identity columns. Where unique identity columns are automatically unique (pk/uk constraint), automatically skip numbers that already exist, and only throw exception if file is out of available numbers.

We use identity columns to uniquely identify rows. If we recreate tables (starting back at 1) or otherwise recycle numbers we want OS to automatically skip numbers that already exist. Currently, without this behavior, programs fail because programmers thought OS handles this for them (it doesn't but it definitely should).

EXAMPLE

ALTER TABLE table

ADD COLUMN column INTEGER

GENERATED ALWAYS AS >> UNIQUE << IDENTITY

( START WITH 1

INCREMENT BY 1

NO MINVALUE

NO MAXVALUE

CYCLE

CACHE 20

NO ORDER )

BM does not intend to provide a solution to this Idea at this time, so it is being closed. We understand the benefit of this request, but establishing a different, alternate, behavior for identity columns is a large effort that the Db2 for i team will not be addressing any time soon.

When a table gets reestablished, you can use the QSYS2.RESTART_IDENTITY procedure to set the appropriate value for the identity column based on the prior table.
