Provide SQL service that validates a character variable etc. as a valid OS name

Why is it useful?

Currently there is functionality within the OS to validate a character string as a name. Command definitions provide this and CHECK keyword in display files too. There is no equivalent in SQL. We have several stored procedures that accept character variables that we would want to ensure meet the requirements for an OS name before passing that on to other SQL functions. I am aware that specifying an invalid name to an SQL function like CREATE TABLE returns an error, but that is a "generic" invalid token message. This gives no real clue as to the precise nature of the error.

Also, a solution from IBM would cater for international variations in the valid character set and would return an error message in the installed language.

Who would benefit from it?

Any software developer using SQL!

How should it work?

In exactly the same way as command definitions for *NAME etc. and CHECK(VN) / CHECK(VNE) in displays. It should handle short and long names; possibly dependent on the length of the character string passed, and the use of ""s around the string for preserving case etc.

The CAAC has reviewed this IBM Idea and recommends that IBM view this as a “nice to have” low priority feature.

Background: The COMMON Americas Advisory Council (CAAC) members have a broad range of experience in working with small and medium-sized IBM i customers. CAAC has a key role in working with IBM i development to help assess the value and impact of individual IBM Ideas on the broader IBM i community and has therefore reviewed your Idea.
