IBM Power Ideas Portal

This portal is to open public enhancement requests against IBM Power Systems products, including IBM i. To view all of your ideas submitted to IBM, create and manage groups of Ideas, or create an idea explicitly set to be either visible by all (public) or visible only to you and IBM (private), use the IBM Unified Ideas Portal (https://ideas.ibm.com).

Shape the future of IBM!

Make Last Saved Info Object Information visible on production partition when BRMS backup occurs on Flashcopy partition

To improve Production up-time, we have adopted a Backup strategy where the IBM i production partition is flash copied to a backup partition. BRMS is used to do a full save of the backup partition to tape media. This means the SAVE object information is updated on the Backup partition and never reflected on the production partition.

When we display the object save information on production, it never changes.

Enhancement request:

When Flash Copy is enabled on production, could the save information from the BACKUP partition be viewed (DSPOBJD) on production instead of the outdated save information.

This would greatly improve the Flash copy experience.

Note: QUSRBRM library is always restored from the Backup partition to production following the save to tape so save information is available but not in the traditional way

After consideration, the BRMS team does not intend to provide a solution to this request at this time, so it is being closed. BRMS mainly uses operating system commands and APIs to perform operations. After discussing this with the IBM i save/restore development team, it was determined that there currently isn't a way to handle this and it would be a sizeable change to implement. As mentioned by others, this request is similar to existing IDEA IBMI-I-3318. A FlashCopy represents a point-in-time copy of your data. As soon as that FlashCopy is taken, the data between the FlashCopy and the original production copy diverges. In many cases, this is because the production copy continues making further changes and a complete solution would need to consider this as well. Therefore, a save of an object on a Flashcopy, while it may save pretty close to the same object, it may not always be identical to the object on the production copy so the save information cannot be propagated back to the production system. The BRMS team will monitor any future save/restore operating system changes that may offer the required functionality and investigate further at that time.

this seems very close to an existing IDEA IBMI-I-3318
