BRMS Recovery Process for when a 'Write-Protected Tape Volume' is mounted on a VTL during a 'BRMS-Restricted Backup' that causes an abnormal EOJ due to NO Built-in-Auto-Recovery.

We run a Monthly 'BRMS-Restricted Backup' and rely heavily upon it for a secondary/alternate system recovery option in the event of catastrophic failure.

We use a 'VTL' as our primary backup device and the tape volumes contained therein are never 'Write-Protected' as we depend on BRMS to manage tape volume statuses.

Our Backup failed due to the Mount-in-Error of an "*ACTIVE BRMS Tape Volume"...

CPF4316- Volume loaded on device TAPMLB54 is write protected... Followed by:

CPF4035 - Processing not complete for volume XXX### on device TAPMLB##. ... Followed by:

CPF3794 - Save or restore operation ended unsuccessfully.

The BRMS Restricted-Backup provided NO Built-in Error Recovery process to handle this condition and as a result, simply ENDED Abnormally and restarted the system as designed.

Questions?...

1. Is there an already existing Error Recovery Routine that can be incorporated into the 'BRMS-Restricted Backup' to effectively auto-resolve/auto-recover from the CPF4316 error condition?

2. Can a 'MONMSG' statement be utilized here and a NEW Mount Request be made?  ... OR

3. Creation of a 'NEW MessageID' to provide options that can be included in the System Reply List as an Entry to force enable the backup to request the 'Mounting of a New Tape'

until a volume is found that is 'Available for Write' operations?

Case TS019404567 is being reopened to continue investigation, this issue should be resolved using the case and should not require an IBM Idea.
