Allow concurrent restores from a single save file

The suggestion is to be able to restore content from a single SAVF to two (or more) places at one.The use case is environment refresh. We refresh two environments at the same time and because time is limited and the restore process is the longest process, we duplicate the SAVFs first to allow two environment restores to be running concurrently, but this requires extra storage that is otherwise not needed.Since a SAVF's content is immutable (aside of clearing, deleting or overwriting of course) it would seem that it should be possible to have two (or more) restore processes reading from the same save file.SAVLIB LIB(MYBIGLIB) DEV(*SAVF) SAVF(QGPL/MYBIGLIB) RSTLIB(MYBIGLIB1)SAVLIB LIB(MYBIGLIB) DEV(*SAVF) SAVF(QGPL/MYBIGLIB) RSTLIB(MYBIGLIB2)

    Hello. The context of "environment" in my original post is application instance. The scope is within one LPAR. So, I can have a SAVF (QGPL/MYBIGLIB in my original example) and I can run two RSTLIB (or RSTOBJ) operations from it at al the same time, inside one LPAR. Currently this is not possible. Currently a second RST operation will fail if the SAVF is in use by another RST operation. I hope this clarifies the question. Please let me know in case it is still not clear.

    Hello, and thank you for submitting your idea! We appreciate your input.

    To help us evaluate it further, we need a bit more detail. You mentioned ?two environments? ? can you confirm whether this refers to two separate IBM i system partitions?

    If so, the SAVF files would need to exist in each environment to allow for restoration. In this case, the recommended approach would be the same as the process you?re currently using. Unfortunately, it wouldn?t be feasible to use one system to host the SAVF for the other environment.
