IBM i - Build an hypervisor linked to a physical device (dongle) to run "IBM i Dev-Edition" in a Apple Mac with Silicon processor.

To improve IBM i adoption with new generations we need to provide them with an inexpensive and "cool" experience.

IBM i runs in its own "hardware abstraction layer", so porting to a new hardware is supposed to be less complex than other OSs.

Most students and young developers can afford a Mac (even the most expensive ones when required), and I can imagine an IBM-branded KVM software, probably similar to UTM, to use an existing software, with limited I/O resources (the NVMe internal/external disks) and limited memory, to get a full IBM i experience for, let say 5 users max.

A USB-C dongle, linked to the hypervisor, could provide the required and unique serial number, allowing to send by postal mail to any country, after paying for this physical device.  IBM i can still use a subscription model, so you can have control on licensing all the time.

I think this could be an amazing opportunity to expand the OS reach on new generations

The CAAC has reviewed this IBM Idea and recommends that IBM review venues for Self-trainning on IBM i, which have been critical on the past.

Background: The COMMON Americas Advisory Council (CAAC) members have a broad range of experience in working with small and medium-sized IBM i customers. CAAC has a key role in working with IBM i development to help assess the value and impact of individual IBM Ideas on the broader IBM i community and has therefore reviewed your Idea.

Alternative Idea: What about a "Power Pi"?

A low-cost, low-energy Power processor single-board machine with a free version of AIX and/or IBM i for personal use and study?

Like a Raspberry Pi with a small Power CPU - maybe a SSD socket - Ethernet and USB for power supply.

Ideal price-point would be under 200$ to make it attractive to students and hobbyists, who could than start creating solutions on Power.
