Implement BRMS in S3 compatibility (I would like to know if there is any plan in future to implement BRMS in S3 compatibility)

We are using BRMS on some of the servers as we are planning for S3 compatible storage for BRMS backup. Please confirm IBMi compatible on S3 protocols.

Our plan is to replace the physical tape library with S3 protocol to backup the data to Dell ECS Storage (EX5000 or similar).

We have opened ticket TS021261125 to check for more details and got response from IBM that BRMS itself doesn’t natively speak to S3.

We would request IBM to implement BRMS in S3 compatibility since it is necessary for our business

needs.

The 5770-ICC product supports the S3 protocol but is only tested against IBM Cloud Storage S3 and AWS S3. There is no direct testing against specific on premises storage appliances and not all on premises storage appliances exactly follow the S3 protocol. It is up to the customer to assume that risk that the vendor behaves the same way as IBM Cloud and AWS. There are VTL solution you can put in front of an S3 appliance that may be more suitable for IBM i backups. Please be aware when using S3 object storage to backup and restore you have first save locally to a virtual optical/tape and then transfer the image. Taking a backup directly to S3 storage is not something IBM i is going to pursue at this time.

I would like to know more about these.

    1. Our S3 environment will be an on-prem environment. can you confirm if the Dell ECS or NetApp StorageGrid is certified to be used and if you have web links where we can see that the Dell ECS or NetApp StorageGrid are certified to be used as backup destination using S3 protocol.

    2. For the network requirements since we will be on prem and will use our TD network, can you provide the network requirements so that we can assure that the network will support the needed throughput.

We are planning for on-premises private cloud environments deploying inside our own data center. We would like to know if private cloud storage appliance supports Dell EMC ECS on IBMi.

The BRMS team feels this request is met using BRMS with the IBM Cloud Storage Solutions for i product so it is being closed.

For more information on the recommended solution reach out to your IBM sales representative and here is a BRMS wiki link for reference: https://fortradocs.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/IWT/pages/165642270/BRMS+and+IBM+Cloud+Storage+Solutions+for+i

Please let me know more details about 5733-ICC integration.

BRMS requires the IBM Cloud Storage Solutions for i product to enable S3 compatibility. All S3 data?transfer operations are performed by IBM Cloud Storage Solutions for i, not by BRMS. BRMS relies on product 5733?ICC for this support, and there are no plans to integrate or replace that functionality within BRMS.

Please let us know if you need more details; otherwise, this request will be closed as supported through the current BRMS and 5733-ICC integration.

BRMS would like to gather a bit more detail to ensure this request is directed to the correct team. Today, Backup, Recovery, and Media Services (BRMS) for IBM i can work with Cloud Storage Solutions for i to move virtual save media to and from cloud storage, including resources that support S3 compatibility.

The current list of supported Cloud Storage Solutions for i resources, including S3?compatible options, is available here:
    https://www.ibm.com/docs/en/i/7.4.0?topic=guide-working-resources-in-cloud-storage-solutions

To help us understand your needs, could you clarify whether you are asking for additional S3?compatible cloud storage resources to be supported by Cloud Storage Solutions for i? If the currently supported options do not meet your requirements, we can engage the Cloud Storage Solutions team to review what additional S3 support may be needed.
