IBM i Minimum password length user level

On IBM i, the minimum password length is controlled by the system value QPWDMINLEN, which applies uniformly to all user profiles across the platform. While this provides centralized control, it does not allow differentiated password policies based on user type or access method.

In alignment with PCI DSS and other regulatory compliance requirements, it is necessary to enforce stronger password standards—specifically, a minimum of 12 characters for standard interactive users and a minimum of 15 characters for ODBC/JDBC or service-based access. Given the varying risk profiles associated with different access channels, it is advisable to introduce user-level or access-type-specific password length controls rather than relying solely on a global system value.

Implementing more granular password policy enforcement would enhance security posture, support regulatory compliance, and reduce the risk associated with credential-based attacks, particularly for externally exposed or programmatic access accounts.
