IBM Power Ideas Portal

This portal is to open public enhancement requests against IBM Power Systems products, including IBM i. To view all of your ideas submitted to IBM, create and manage groups of Ideas, or create an idea explicitly set to be either visible by all (public) or visible only to you and IBM (private), use the IBM Unified Ideas Portal (https://ideas.ibm.com).

Shape the future of IBM!

We invite you to shape the future of IBM, including product roadmaps, by submitting ideas that matter to you the most. Here's how it works:

Search existing ideas

Start by searching and reviewing ideas and requests to enhance a product or service. Take a look at ideas others have posted, and add a comment, vote, or subscribe to updates on them if they matter to you. If you can't find what you are looking for,

Post your ideas
  1. Post an idea.

  2. Get feedback from the IBM team and other customers to refine your idea.

  3. Follow the idea through the IBM Ideas process.

Proactive Monitoring and Alerting for Save Operation Object Limits on IBM i

Currently, IBM i lacks a built-in monitoring or alerting capabilities related to internal save operation limits, particularly concerning the number of objects processed in a single save request.

While a library can support up to approximately 1,000,000 objects, practical limitations in save operations (e.g., SAVLIB, SAVOBJ, or BRMS saves) restrict a single save to roughly ~100,000–120,000 objects. Without proactive alerting, unplanned backup outage would occured. This would be a potential operational risk.

Would an informational message sent during save that indicates the limit is being approached be sufficient or would system level monitoring be required?

IBM i already includes built-in monitoring to help prevent storage issues. The system automatically tracks overall disk utilization and sends a warning message when usage reaches a defined threshold. By default, this occurs at 90% capacity, at which point message CPF0907 (Storage Threshold Exceeded) is sent to the system operator queue (QSYSOPR).

As a best practice, many environments lower this threshold to around 85%. This provides additional lead time to take corrective action before system performance begins to degrade (typically around 90%) or more serious issues can occur as utilization approaches 95% and above.

While this monitoring is not specific to backups, it effectively covers all storage usage on the system, including backup-related growth.
