SVHDX_OPEN_DEVICE_CONTEXT

We have a suggestion for improving the IBMi Netserver.
In our view, it would be highly beneficial if IBM were to integrate ‘SVHDX_OPEN_DEVICE_CONTEXT’ into the IBMi Netserver. This would lead to significant improvements to the IBMi Netserver by enabling the use of end-to-end encryption, higher compression to increase data transfer speeds, and integrity checks. Implementing this suggestion would bring the IBMi Netserver into line with the current standard of Windows 11.

Thank you for submitting this idea, however the IBM development team does not have plans to implement the Remote Shared Virtual Disk Protocol (MS-RSVD) at this time. The SVHDX_OPEN_DEVICE_CONTEXT SMB Create context only applies when the server supports the MS-RSVD protocol. Current versions of the IBM i operating system only support SMB versions up to SMB 3.0. The SVHDX_OPEN_DEVICE_CONTEXT Create context is not valid for any SMB version that is currently supported, and IBM i NetServer will return an error to the client if the client attempts to specify the context on a create.

In the future when SMB 3.1.1 is supported by IBM i NetServer, the SVHDX_OPEN_DEVICE_CONTEXT will be ignored by the server on sessions that have negotiated SMB 3.1.1 due to lack of server support for the MS-RSVD protocol. Attempts to use the context on sessions that have negotiated SMB 3.0 or lower will continue to return an error since the context is defined in the MS-SMB2 specification as invalid for those protocol dialects.
