Extend the functionality of the IN operator

It would be a great help if the first argument of the IN operator could be extended to also enable arrays. This way, you could write a single statement to check whether an array element is present or meets the required bounds:

Dcl-s myList char(1) dim(8);

Dcl-s newList char(1) dim(15);

if myList IN newList;

if myList IN %List('A':'H':'a');

if myList IN %range(d'2026-06-01':d'2026-06-30');

    Thank you for taking the time to submit your Idea. After careful consideration, we know that we cannot deliver your requested enhancement soon, so it is being declined. However, your Idea does align with the future strategy of our product and we believe it may have future value, so we will add it to an internal list for us to keep in mind for the future.

    If this is implemented, there are 2 possible ways to handle the concept of "list1 IN list2".

    • TRUE if all elements of list1 are in list2
    • TRUE if at least one element of list1 is in list2

    Additional syntax might be needed to distinguish between the two possible meanings of this possible future version of the IN operator.

    The CAAC has reviewed this IBM Idea and recommends that IBM view this as a medium priority Idea that should be addressed.

    Background: The COMMON Americas Advisory Council (CAAC) members have a broad range of experience in working with small and medium-sized IBM i customers.  CAAC has a key role in working with IBM i development to help assess the value and impact of individual IBM Ideas on the broader IBM i community and has therefore reviewed your Idea.
