AI-Powered Intelligent Code Modernization and Optimization Assistant for IBM i RPG, COBOL, and CL Applications

Many enterprise organizations continue to rely on IBM i applications developed in RPG, COBOL, and CL to support business-critical operations. While these applications remain highly reliable, maintaining, optimizing, documenting, and modernizing large legacy codebases can be time-consuming and requires significant expertise.

I propose introducing an AI-Powered Intelligent Code Modernization and Optimization Assistant as a native capability within the IBM i ecosystem. This assistant could leverage generative AI and code intelligence to help developers better understand existing applications, accelerate modernization initiatives, and improve overall developer productivity while preserving the stability and business value of IBM i systems.

The assistant could provide capabilities such as AI-generated code explanations, automatic documentation, code quality analysis, modernization recommendations, optimization suggestions, security best practices, impact analysis for proposed code changes, and intelligent guidance for upgrading legacy applications using modern IBM i development approaches. It could also identify inefficient coding patterns, detect potential issues before deployment, and recommend improvements aligned with IBM best practices.

Such a capability would be especially valuable for organizations modernizing long-established RPG, COBOL, and CL applications, helping experienced developers work more efficiently while making it easier for newer developers to understand and maintain existing enterprise systems.

Adding an AI-powered modernization assistant would strengthen IBM i by improving developer productivity, accelerating application modernization, reducing maintenance effort, supporting knowledge transfer, and helping organizations continue to innovate while preserving the reliability, security, and performance that IBM i is known for.
