Enhance WRKJOB by adding an option to display the currently executing SQL statement and execution details for a selected job.

Many IBM i administrators and support teams rely on WRKJOB as the primary green-screen interface for monitoring active jobs. However, when investigating performance issues, resource consumption, or long-running database activity, it is often difficult to quickly identify the SQL statement being executed by a job, particularly for server jobs such as QZDASOINIT.

A new option within WRKJOB to view the currently running SQL statement would significantly improve problem determination and system monitoring. The feature could display information such as:

  • Current SQL statement being executed.
  • Statement start time.
  • Elapsed execution time.
  • SQL client or application information (when available).
  • Execution status (running, waiting, suspended, etc.).
  • Resource consumption indicators such as CPU usage.

This enhancement would allow administrators, operators, developers, and IBM support personnel to rapidly identify resource-intensive SQL activity directly from the green-screen interface without requiring additional SQL services, performance tools, or external monitoring solutions.

Benefits:

  • Faster performance troubleshooting.
  • Improved visibility into database activity.
  • Easier identification of long-running or blocked SQL statements.
  • Reduced time to diagnose issues involving QZDASOINIT and other database server jobs.
  • More complete operational monitoring from traditional IBM i interfaces.

This capability would be especially valuable for organizations that primarily manage IBM i systems through 5250 sessions and require quick access to SQL execution details during incident response and performance analysis.

    The CAAC has reviewed this Idea and, after careful consideration, does not recommend that IBM move forward with the request in its current form at this time.

    Reason: The CAAC recognizes the value of viewing a job’s SQL activity to support troubleshooting. During its review, the subgroup determined that the underlying need can already be addressed through existing IBM i SQL services, including QSYS2.ACTIVE_JOB_INFO, which provides SQL statement text and related job information. A working SQL example has also been shared in the comments on this Idea. Although the request proposes accessing this information through an additional WRKJOB option, the CAAC does not recommend a separate enhancement at this time because existing capabilities provide a way to obtain the information. We encourage you to review the example and share any specific needs it does not address.

    Although the CAAC is not recommending implementation of this request, Ideas such as this help IBM and the CAAC better understand the needs and priorities of the IBM i community. We appreciate your contribution and encourage you to continue submitting IBM Ideas and sharing your feedback.
