This portal is to open public enhancement requests against IBM Power Systems products, including IBM i. To view all of your ideas submitted to IBM, create and manage groups of Ideas, or create an idea explicitly set to be either visible by all (public) or visible only to you and IBM (private), use the IBM Unified Ideas Portal (https://ideas.ibm.com).
We invite you to shape the future of IBM, including product roadmaps, by submitting ideas that matter to you the most. Here's how it works:
Start by searching and reviewing ideas and requests to enhance a product or service. Take a look at ideas others have posted, and add a comment, vote, or subscribe to updates on them if they matter to you. If you can't find what you are looking for,
Post an idea.
Get feedback from the IBM team and other customers to refine your idea.
Follow the idea through the IBM Ideas process.

IBM does not intend to provide a solution to this request at this time, so it is being closed.
This request is low priority since it has been open for a long time and it still has a low number of votes.
The ILE RPG team has quite a long list of higher priority requirements, so this request is not likely to be implemented anytime soon.
IBM has received the requirement and is evaluating it. IBM will provide a response after evaluation is complete.
To achieve this for the output aspect of DSPLY, the printf() API can be used.
printf ('File ' + %trim(filename) + ' could not be opened.' + NEWLINE);
It might be useful to write your own wrapper for this, to avoid having to remember to add the NEWLINE.
dcl-pr print;
theString pointer value options(*string);
addNewline ind const options(*nopass); // default to TRUE
end-pr;
print ('File ' + %trim(filename) + ' could not be opened.);
dcl-proc print export;
dcl-pi *n;
theString pointer value options(*string);
addNewline ind const options(*nopass); // default to TRUE
end-pi;
dcl-c NEWLINE x'15';
dcl-pr printf extproc('printf');
string pointer value options(*string);
rep1 pointer value options(*string : *nopass); // needs at least one *NOPASS parm
end-pr;
printf (string);
if addNewline;
printf (NEWLINE);
endif;
end-proc;
