openpty and forkpty

APIs openpty and forkpty are not available on IBM i. There are a number of Node.js projects(n1) that require those APIs because pty.js(n2) is built on it.

n1 - https://www.npmjs.com/browse/depended/pty.js
n2 - https://github.com/chjj/pty.js

It has been documented(n3) that pty.h isn't available on AIX. The closest thing I've found to supporting openpty and forkpty is perzl.org's port of cvs.schmorp.de/libptytty/.

n3 - https://www.gnu.org/software/gnulib/manual/html_node/pty_002eh.html

I am guessing that these APIs will become more important the more SSH things get implemented on IBM i/PASE. That's not to say they aren't needed now, because it is definitely holding back installation of some Node.js modules.

Use Case:

The specific scenarios I've run into this is for browser based development tools like ssh terminals and IDEs.

    >If possible, please provide a list of items for which this has been a blocker. I am aware of PhantomJS. Do you know other specific examples?

From the original post I included reference to pty.js (https://www.npmjs.com/browse/depended/pty.js). That is used by many browser-based IDEs for the ssh terminal portion. For example, xterm.js(https://github.com/sourcelair/xterm.js) uses pty.js and is the shell for code.visualstudio.com/sourcelair/etc.

Let me know if you need more references.
