File Monitors for IBM Navigator for i

Management Central, through System i Navigator, has File Monitors that monitor file activity and can executes commands based on various conditions. That functionality does not exist in IBM Navigator for i, which is positioned as the replacement product for System i Navigator.

Use Case:

The File Monitor watches a file (local or remote) for pre-defined changes. When the change occurs, a system command is executed. That command will import/export data or initiate some other process.

Due a low number of votes and interest in this, we will be rejecting this RFE at this time. We may consider it in the future.

There is another RFE from Dawn May for the same functionality.

    We have 3 monitors defined.
    1. Monitors a text file on the QNTC file system. That text file is the log of all orders received. When the monitor detects the file has changed, it spawns a job to import that log file into a Db2 table.
    2. Monitors a text file on the QNTC file system. That text file is a log of all quotes we've sent out to our customers. When the monitor detects the file has changed, it spawns a job that reads that text file and imports the quote PDF files into our native document management system.
    3. Monitors a text file on the local file system. That text file is a log of all orders entered. When the monitor detects the file has changed, it spawns a job which exports info for the new orders to our web site.

I need to point out that we no longer use any of these monitors. These are critical processes, and we gave up waiting and completely rewrote them all.

    Thank you

The CAAC has reviewed this RFE. More information is needed. CAAC members are not using File Monitors anymore, and not aware of use cases for them either. Folks who want this enhancement need to reply with a use case, or IBM is likely to close this RFE due to lack of input.

Background: The COMMON Americas Advisory Council (CAAC) members have a broad range of experience in working with small and medium-sized IBM i customers. CAAC has a key role in working with IBM i development to help assess the value and impact of individual RFEs on the broader IBM i community, and has therefore reviewed your RFE.

Can you give a justification for this ? What sorts of things are you using the support for. This function was specifically not added to the monitor support for Navigator as we did not believe the file monitors were used. This is the first request in many years, so need to understand what you are using them for.
