The low latency of IB rules out ethernet for HPC MPI customers. This and the ability to build a scalable fat tree are reasons customers are requesting IB on Power. Comments than I have read say that the IBM Power 9 server is 8x faster than the x86 on HPC workloads. Using IB HDR or NDR speeds and Power10 you have a solution that x86 can not deal with.
My high volume Customers are all HDR and NDR.
A bridge switch to ethernet won’t work.
I am receiving more and more requests for Infiniband support on Power10 myself not only for HDR but also NDR as well.
