PowerVC's support policy is 6 moth for ifix, 18 month for fix pack creation, while VIOS is 3 years support policy. VIOS caters for multiple LPARs, and therefore the customers tend to plan longer period to upgrade VIOS. The gap of support period makes PowerVC upgrade difficult sometimes. For example, PowerVC 1.4.2 to 1.4.3 upgrade requires VIOS to be upgraded from 22.214.171.124 to 126.96.36.199. Until VIOS is upgraded, PowerVC cannot be upgraded, and it causes PowerVC to be out of service. Therefore it is good for PowerVC to have backward compatibility with VIOS so that PowerVC can be upgraded without VIOS upgrade. In the backward compatibility mode, no new function is available, this is just for keeping PowerVC to be in the supported level.
