IBM Power Ideas Portal

This portal is to open public enhancement requests against IBM Power Systems products, including IBM i. To view all of your ideas submitted to IBM, create and manage groups of Ideas, or create an idea explicitly set to be either visible by all (public) or visible only to you and IBM (private), use the IBM Unified Ideas Portal (https://ideas.ibm.com).

Shape the future of IBM!

We invite you to shape the future of IBM, including product roadmaps, by submitting ideas that matter to you the most. Here's how it works:

Search existing ideas

Start by searching and reviewing ideas and requests to enhance a product or service. Take a look at ideas others have posted, and add a comment, vote, or subscribe to updates on them if they matter to you. If you can't find what you are looking for,

Post your ideas
  1. Post an idea.

  2. Get feedback from the IBM team and other customers to refine your idea.

IBM Idea: Simplify SR-IOV VF Deconfiguration for Adapter Replacement

IBM Idea: Simplify SR-IOV VF Deconfiguration for Adapter Replacement

Title:
Automated or Centralized Deconfiguration of SR-IOV Virtual Functions (VFs) Across LPARs for Adapter Maintenance

Description:
In environments using SR-IOV with vNICs and redundant SEAs, replacing a failing physical adapter still requires manual deconfiguration of each Virtual Function (VF) on every affected LPAR. While redundancy ensures service continuity, the process of freeing the adapter for replacement is time-consuming and error-prone.

In a recent case, we had to manually deconfigure VFs on 7 LPARs – manageable in this instance. However, on other adapters with 40+ VFs across 40 LPARs, this would be extremely complex and operationally risky.

Proposal:
Introduce a centralized or automated method (via HMC or VIOS command interface) to:

  • Identify all LPARs using VFs from a specific physical adapter

  • Deconfigure or migrate those VFs in bulk

  • Optionally, trigger failover or reconfiguration of SEAs as part of the workflow

Benefits:

  • Greatly reduces operational effort and risk during adapter replacement

  • Improves serviceability and uptime in large-scale Power environments

  • Enhances automation and consistency in SR-IOV management

Target Components:

  • HMC

  • PowerVM / VIOS

  • SR-IOV / vNIC management tools

agree, such a feature would prevent potential errors and thus increases reliability.

fully agree with Andre....that would be a great thing and advantage for customer as well for technician

fully supporting this... it would also speedup SSRs waiting time for work done by UNIX admin (before and after adapter was physically replaced).
