This portal is to open public enhancement requests against IBM Power Systems products, including IBM i. To view all of your ideas submitted to IBM, create and manage groups of Ideas, or create an idea explicitly set to be either visible by all (public) or visible only to you and IBM (private), use the IBM Unified Ideas Portal (https://ideas.ibm.com).
We invite you to shape the future of IBM, including product roadmaps, by submitting ideas that matter to you the most. Here's how it works:
Start by searching and reviewing ideas and requests to enhance a product or service. Take a look at ideas others have posted, and add a comment, vote, or subscribe to updates on them if they matter to you. If you can't find what you are looking for,
Post an idea.
Get feedback from the IBM team and other customers to refine your idea.
Follow the idea through the IBM Ideas process.

Because of a heavily time constrained maintenance window
customer Finanz Informatik relies on the alt_root_vg command to
apply VIOS Service Pack (SP) updates.
E.g. the following command sequence is used to update the VIOS
from FP24 to FP24 SP3:
# mount d100stucsm13p2:/csminstall/AIX/aix61/lpp_viofp24_sp3
/mnt
# /usr/ios/cli/ioscli alt_root_vg -target 'hdisk2 hdisk3' -bundle
update_all -location /mnt
This procedure results in an unresolvable error condition if some
of the installed ifix (APARs) are not fixed in the new SP and
consequently are not removed. In order to utilize the cloning
capability of alt_root_vg command a new option is needed to force
the de-installation of an ifix. After the clone has been created the
existing ifix or an ifix specifically build for the target software level
can be applied afterwards. On AIX one could use alt_disk_install
Phase 1 only, than manually remove the ifix, than perform Phase
2+3, than install the new ifix. But the alt_root_vg command does
not allow to separate the cloning from the update phase.
In essence, it all comes down to implement the full set of SW
update functionality for the VIOS environment as it is available for
a regular AIX image.
