IBM Power Ideas Portal

Shape the future of IBM!

We invite you to shape the future of IBM, including product roadmaps, by submitting ideas that matter to you the most. Here's how it works:

Post your ideas

Start by posting ideas and requests to this portal to enhance a Power product or service. Take a look at ideas others have posted and upvote them if they matter to you,

  1. Post an idea

  2. Upvote ideas and add comments to ideas that matter most to you

  3. Get feedback from the IBM team to refine your idea

Help IBM prioritize your ideas and requests

The IBM team may need your help to refine the ideas so they may ask for more information or feedback. The Power teams will then decide if they can begin working on your idea. If they can start during the next development cycle, they will put the idea on the priority list. Each team at IBM works on a different schedule, where some ideas can be implemented right away, others may be placed on a different schedule.

Receive notification on the decision

Some ideas can be implemented at IBM, while others may not fit within the development plans for the product. In either case, the team will let you know as soon as possible. In some cases, we may be able to find alternatives for ideas which cannot be implemented in a reasonable time.

Change RPG to support UNLOCK using RCDFMT name

RPG allows us to CHAIN using RCDFMT. RPG forces us to UPDATE/DELETE using RCDFMT. RPG does NOT allow us to UNLOCK using RCDFMT... This leads to buggy code -- it would be easier to spot mistakes and avoid bugs if we could CHAIN RCDFMT, UPDATE RCDFM...

declare multiple variables on the same line in RPG free

Please add the possibility to declare multiple variable of the the same type on the same line, taking advantage of "free" RPG form possibilities, similar to C or other languages. i.e. DCL-S i1, i2, i3, i4 INT(10); DCL-DS struct1, struct2, struct3 ...

Defaults for Dcl-pi;

Parameters for programs and procedures are declared with Dcl-pi. Today it requires to to give the name or *N. But for programs and procedures that does not return a value - it would be appreciated if that was not required and could default to *N a...

Relaxation of error RNF3776

Today you can declare parameters for programs that use the ctl-opt main just like any other RPG procedure - making declaration of a program as easy as declaring a procedure . However the compile will issue a warning RNF3776 "External program on pr...

%Split should allow array index

Currently %Split returns an array, but it would be nice if it would allow a single index of the array to be returned directly by coding for example mystring = %Split(string: ':')(1); This avoids using a work array.

New function %lookupNE() to find the first element in an array not equal to the search argument

Many times I have to locate the first non-blank or non-zero element in an array. To search for it I either have to code a for/endfor or dow/enddo loop to scan for it. Sorting it is not an option. The sequence must be kept. So often it is something...

Support DEC keyword to declare Decimal variables

There is a need to support the DEC keyword when defining decimal variables in RPG IV. It would match both SQL and all other HLL on the system. I understand perhaps the implementation of FIXNBR(*INPUTPACKED) contributed to the decision to use Packe...

RPGLE - Prevent using Data Structure as a field

The attached file contains a subset of code with data structure definitions and code using the data structures. RPGLE will allow you to reference the data structure name and treat it like a character field and compile it successfully. I cannot t...

Provide a "not-in" operator

Now that we have a conditional “in” operator, please provide a “not-in” operator, that can be used wherever “in” can, eg, with %lists, %ranges, arrays, etc. Currently, we need to code the awkward if not (Value in %list(x:y:...)); with not-in, this...

Allow duplicate CTL-OPT keywords.

In the RFE https://www.ibm.com/developerworks/rfe/execute?use_case=viewRfe&CR_ID=153870I raised an idea of overriding the values of the control specification using /SET.Barbara Morris asked me to raise it in a separate RFE. This is hereby done...
