This portal is to open public enhancement requests against IBM Power Systems products, including IBM i. To view all of your ideas submitted to IBM, create and manage groups of Ideas, or create an idea explicitly set to be either visible by all (public) or visible only to you and IBM (private), use the IBM Unified Ideas Portal (https://ideas.ibm.com).
We invite you to shape the future of IBM, including product roadmaps, by submitting ideas that matter to you the most. Here's how it works:
Start by searching and reviewing ideas and requests to enhance a product or service. Take a look at ideas others have posted, and add a comment, vote, or subscribe to updates on them if they matter to you. If you can't find what you are looking for,
Post an idea.
Get feedback from the IBM team and other customers to refine your idea.
Follow the idea through the IBM Ideas process.

SMB CLIENT for AIX Version 2.1 is available in "AIX Web Download Pack Programs"
https://www-01.ibm.com/marketing/iwm/iwm/web/pickUrxNew.do?source=aixbp
seems a SMB protocol version 2.1 implementation is already available (not sure since when):

let's give it a try :-)
we have seen many operational issues using SMB1 and with Microsoft deprecating SMB1 using CIFS is becoming more challenging each day. We are considering moving share to NFS bit that has its challenges as well.
IBM's intent is to provide and SMB 2.1 solution in 2019.
SMBv1 is eliminated in my organization.
I cannot exchange detailed information in public about what specific applications and functionality we have on our AIX LPARs.
Not having support for SMBv2 or v3 in the AIX CIFS client will force us into a costly redesign operation for our infrastructure and applications flow.
We have considered multiple alternatives:
1. Changing from AIX to Linux is not practical/doable for us.
2. Using Spectrum Scale as an alternative is not practical/doable for us.
3. Using NFS is not practical/doable for us.
Not having CIFS client SMBv2+ support in AIX is a major setback for the position of the IBM POWER platform in our organization.
Have disabled SMBv1 on all Windows servers. Urgent need for SMBv2 and/or SMBv3 support!
We have many applications and many clients to use CIFS. The Applications running under (WebSphere) on AIX, and we are very unhappy about the current situation. The NFS solution is not practical for us.
I don't like the CIFS feature, (I like NFS :-)) but for a future-oriented system is this function one of the must have functions...
We would buy linux in the future ? without Power Plattform ?? Is that the solution... ??
There are no current plans to provide a new CIFs protocol for AIX, but IBM will assess this for the future plans.
CIFS Shares on NETAPP NAS Filer need SMBv2 or v3 to connect with AIX.
If an Operating System cannot communicate anymore with the worlds other Standard Operating Systems it will die.

This is a major issue because Azure only supports SMBv3, and CIFS shares from Azure are needed to protect/offsite things like Spectrum Protect database backups, and other files.
Also, many Windows servers, even prior to 2016, are disabling SMBv1.
AIX has SAMBA 4 in the yum repository, but no mount helper there.
The only CIFS mount helper is in the base OS, and it has not changed substantially in more than a decade.
This is a major customer sat issue and putting a multi-million dollar IBM migration at risk.
