Way to check if microcode updates are already installed

Microcode updates are usually delivered as rpm files. After installing RPM files the new microcode is available in /etc/microcode. Using the command diag it is possible to install new microcodes from /etc/microcode.

Sometimes the two processes - installing of RPM packages and updating microcode on the system - can be done by two different administrators and at different times. It would be good to have some way to check if there are new microcode updates in /etc/microcode available for updates.

It can be implemented as an additional function to diag command. Now AIX administrator can update microcode using:

diag -T download -d fcs0 -c

A new function could be called as 'check' task:

diag -T checknewer -d fcs0 -c

It would also enable Ansible automation of firmware updates on AIX and VIOS.

diag has an option called -fl latest which automatically upgrades the microcode of the adapter if a latest level is available. For example,
    diag -c -d fcs0 -T 'download -fl latest -s /etc/microcode'
this command will automatically update the microcode of fcs0 device to a latest available level in /etc/microcode. Please let us know if this option works for you
