Add EKM component back into newer versions of Java, for hardware based encryption

In Java 5, delivered as part of IBM i, there was an EKM component used for hardware based encryption of backup tapes, included at no additional charge. We use this for ALL of our IBM i backups for the last 10 years, as it was a 'set it and forget it' configuration. Now, as we get ready to upgrade all our systems to IBM i 7.3, I discovered that this capability was not brought forward to the newer versions of Java, but has been replaced by a chargeable option called SKLM. Not only do we have to pay for the encryption feature on the tape library, but also have to add additional complexity and cost to our environment to encrypt our backups.


Use Case:

With IBM i 7.1, we have a simple configuration to manage the encryption of backups and the replacement solution is going to add significant complexity, along with additional cost.

    We purchased the SKLM product and unsuccessfully attempting to install in on a RHEL Linux VM (twice). I have an open ticket with the SKLM support team, who is 'looking into it' and have engaged development in the process.

    I have resorted to back-leveling one of my partitions to 7.1 so that I could run the encryption component of Java 5, and maintain my encrypted backups as well as read those backups that have already been done.

    In waiting for support to get back to me, I have since requested a Windows VM test server so that I can attempt to install the SKLM software there.

    Seems to be a lot of extra work and expense for something that just worked before, and was integrated into the operating system. I seem to recall somewhere the i in IBM i stood for integrated.
