any way to make this reports more readable are a improvement.
it depends what exactly is to do.
are the reports after the 'hard coded' changes editable in IA ?
the best solution would be if it can be done in info-assist.
changing the code is better than nothing or than now.

Given that, would it be acceptable to have a way to more strictly define the column positions? It would still require a document of multiple reports, but you would be able to 'hard code' how the columns are laid out.

Yes, your suggestion is what I'm currently do.
But the problem that the columns-width of this two reports is not the same because the width of the columns depends on the data, and sum-fields contain normaly a higher value so they are expanded.
think on a report that has 10 numeric columns with this kind of sum. so you cann't positioning the sum-fields exactly under the numeric columns.

One usual suggestion for this is to create two (or more) reports and then create a document combining the multiple reports. Do you think this might work for you? In essence the reports will be additive, with the second report shown after the results of the first report.
