15 Character limit on Domain name in i5/OS NetServer Properties, need at least 30, but 256 is optimal

System: IBM i Actor: User needing updated functionality.
The i5/OS NetServer properties allows a user to specify a domain name.

In iNavigator when attempting to update the domain name in the i5/OS NetServer General Next Start screen the domain name field has a 15 character limit. This limit is too small for most domain names, but specifically for ours. this limit should be extended to 256 characters.

Use Case:

System: AS400 running a software package for commodities trading processing.
Actor: Downstream systems

Move files to a cloud storage system

Scenario:

Created files need to move to a cloud based storage system using CIFS, replaces NFS.

I never received an email or other notice that this RFE was declined. How do we resolve the issue with CIFS?

Thank you for submitting this request. We are not planning to make a change to the IBM i NetServer domain name at this time.

The domain name in the IBM i NetServer configuration is for NetBIOS and is limited by that architecture. The NetBIOS architecture defines the domain name to be 16 characters. The first 15 characters are the name and the 16th character is reserved as resource type indicator. Initially the primary use for the Domain name was with WINS and browsing the Network Neighborhood. It remains in the NetServer configuration to enable interaction with NetBIOS networks even though most current SMB clients locate the server by the DNS name of the system. IBM i NetServer is a standalone SMB server and does not participate as a member server in a Windows domain.
