IBM Power Ideas Portal

This portal is to open public enhancement requests against IBM Power Systems products, including IBM i. To view all of your ideas submitted to IBM, create and manage groups of Ideas, or create an idea explicitly set to be either visible by all (public) or visible only to you and IBM (private), use the IBM Unified Ideas Portal (https://ideas.ibm.com).

Shape the future of IBM!

We invite you to shape the future of IBM, including product roadmaps, by submitting ideas that matter to you the most. Here's how it works:

Search existing ideas

Start by searching and reviewing ideas and requests to enhance a product or service. Take a look at ideas others have posted, and add a comment, vote, or subscribe to updates on them if they matter to you. If you can't find what you are looking for,

Post your ideas
  1. Post an idea.

  2. Get feedback from the IBM team and other customers to refine your idea.

  3. Follow the idea through the IBM Ideas process.

Support 3-way (or n-way) DASD mirroring

We would like to be able to mirror DASD units across 3 (or more) physical devices, instead of just two.

Use Case:

Mirroring as it current exists only has protection against a single DASD device failure. While the probability of the mirrored unit failing is low, the rebuild process puts extreme load on the remaining unit and can take a very long time with large modern drives.

It means it did not make the cut for the next release. If you formally want it considered again, you should submit it again. Disk technology is constantly changing and different ideas are always being considered but RFEs do help in the prioritization conversations. It should not be set for 50 years, I will check into that.

Does this response of "Declined" mean it is being deferred to a future release, or remove from consideration entirely? Should I submit a new RFE to have this be considered for a future release?

I see the reconsideration tab says it cannot be reconsidered for 600 months == 50 years?!

Also - why doesn't the RFE system send any sort of email notification when these requests are updated?!

Thank you for your feature request. While this is a valid request, it did not make the cut for new features coming out next release.

Recent issues that continue to support this request:

PMR 69220,082,000: A defective DASD unit was causing two IOA to be entirely unresponsive to the OS, reporting as "Occupied" in the Packaging Hardware Resources section of the DST/SST Hardware Service Manager with no actual errors being logged from the IOA or attached devices. This resulted in two 5887 drawers / 23 units on the System ASP being inaccessible to the OS. We were able to IPL, but were unprotected until we could locate and identify the failed unit -- 3+ way mirroring would have left us protected. (If we had been using any flavor of RAID, this would have made it impossible to IPL our system!)

PMR 69313,082,000: An intermittent 5887 ESM failure required powering off the IOAs to exchange the unit. We were exposed without protection on 28 units for several hours during the repair and subsequent resume operations, 3+ way mirroring would have kept us protected during this repair.
