Internal LTO Tape for Power9

In the new generation of POWER9 hardware, there is an internal RDX device. While the RDX is a lower cost device, it is extremely slow. Why in the same location, can't an Internal LTOx tape drive be put in. Similar to a 5736 that was put into the Power7. Medium size customers looking for a better backup solution, would pay the additional cost to reduce their backup window.


Use Case:

When looking for a better tape backup solution, since there is already a slot for the RDX, have an LTOx internal tape in the same location so that backups can be performed at a reasonable speed. Backup windows are always shrinking, so a faster device would be better for most smaller and medium IBM i customers.

    The physical dimensions (HxWxD) of an internal LTO device is much larger and longer than that of internal RDX device. LTO tape will not fit in the same space as RDX. There is no space in the POWER9 server for internal LTO tape.
