This portal is to open public enhancement requests against IBM Power Systems products, including IBM i. To view all of your ideas submitted to IBM, create and manage groups of Ideas, or create an idea explicitly set to be either visible by all (public) or visible only to you and IBM (private), use the IBM Unified Ideas Portal (https://ideas.ibm.com).
We invite you to shape the future of IBM, including product roadmaps, by submitting ideas that matter to you the most. Here's how it works:
Start by searching and reviewing ideas and requests to enhance a product or service. Take a look at ideas others have posted, and add a comment, vote, or subscribe to updates on them if they matter to you. If you can't find what you are looking for,
Post an idea.
Get feedback from the IBM team and other customers to refine your idea.
Follow the idea through the IBM Ideas process.
Welcome to the IBM Ideas Portal (https://www.ibm.com/ideas) - Use this site to find out additional information and details about the IBM Ideas process and statuses.

Database modernization on the IBM i is more complex & expensive than it could be.
The Lab Services approach [1] of creating a logical file over redesigned tables, (to act as a surrogate for the old design) is a clever hack that reduces the cost somewhat.
But in order for database modernization to have first class support on the platform, we need the new instead-of-trigger functionality on logical files to allow the logical file to have a different record format then the physical.
Without this, database modernization is incompatible with instead of triggers. Being able to use instead of triggers would open up a world of design techniques that would reduce development times.
[1] Chapter 9 of the "Modernizing IBM i Applications" Redbook.
Create logical file matching existing table definition, and then add new columns like surrogate key, row change timestamp, etc with a new table name. Then try to define business rules at the data layer using instead-of-triggers.

IBM does not intend to provide a solution to this request at this time, so it is being closed.
INSTEAD OF triggers are an SQL concept and cannot easily be extended to logical files as requested. The cost associated with implementing something like this would not be worth the benefit and would be unlikely to be widely adopted. It is recommended that logical files be modernized to use SQL objects (views and/or indexes).
The CAAC has reviewed this requirement and recommends that IBM view this as a “nice to have” low priority feature. This sounds like a smart idea to do, but there are other ways to do this function.
Background: The COMMON Americas Advisory Council (CAAC) members have a broad range of experience in working with small and medium-sized IBM i customers. CAAC has a key role in working with IBM i development to help assess the value and impact of individual RFEs on the broader IBM i community, and has therefore reviewed your RFE.
