IBM Power Ideas Portal

This portal is to open public enhancement requests against IBM Power Systems products, including IBM i. To view all of your ideas submitted to IBM, create and manage groups of Ideas, or create an idea explicitly set to be either visible by all (public) or visible only to you and IBM (private), use the IBM Unified Ideas Portal (https://ideas.ibm.com).

Shape the future of IBM!

We invite you to shape the future of IBM, including product roadmaps, by submitting ideas that matter to you the most. Here's how it works:

RTVSYSINF / UPDSYSINF

1. Include changes to job descriptions and subsystem descriptions to the RTVSYSINF and UPDSYSINF commands.

It's nice that you include changes to the system reply list but if the job descriptions revert back to the default value of INQMSGRPY(*RQD) in a release upgrade then the system reply list won't be used.

2. Add WRKSYSINF and DSPSYSINF commands. It would be nice to see what will be applied prior to executing UPDSYSINF.

Use Case:

After upgrading from 7.1 to 7.3, our jobs are no longer using the system reply list due to the job descriptions reverting back to their default value of INQMSGRPY(*RQD).

This is causing a major problem.

The RTVSYSINF / UPDSYSINF commands handle only a limited subset of user-customizable system objects. They also suffer from the possibility of back-leveling an enhanced system object when an older customized object is restored.
Tom Duncan's comment suggests a far more flexible approach:
"Best practices are to imbed in a CL program all changes to default objects and then run that program after every upgrade or PTF apply to insure that your custom values are in place. This practice will help you avoid all kinds of upgrade pain and anguish, including this one."
Using a CL program has these benefits:
    - The CL program is fully customizable, not limited to those objects that IBM might think to include in the RTVSYSINF / UPDSYSINF commands.
    - The CL program can include customizations for Licensed Program Products and third-party products, not just for objects in the base operating system.
    - System objects that are enhanced for a new release can be changed to match the customization from the older release without back-leveling the new enhancements.
    - Auditors and system administrators can see exactly which system objects have been customized.
    - The CL program an be modified to set up another customized system.
    - The CL program can be run at any time (after upgrade, disaster recovery, or even PTF application) to ensure the desired customizations are retained.
