ACS RunSQLScripts - Release cursor lock on full table read or inactivity

Select statements executed through RunSQLScripts window place a Shared Read lock until a new statement is read or the window is closed.

This can interfere with many methods of processing to include allocate lock exclusive, copy file with replace, and more.

The request is to have the lock automatically released if the table is read complete or through inactivity. It could go as far as releasing the lock in between reads if the user was willing to accept the performance hit

Use Case:

use any simple SQL statement against a table. See PMR for test case, users were checking a table which at the time only had three records and as long as the results were on the screen the table had a lock which prevented different functions that require an exclusive lock

IBM understands this request and will consider it for a future code update, though no commitment is made or implied.

I use RSS quite often to query collection services performance data and if I forget and leave a result window open, it screws up the CS collection rollover to a new collection at midnight. Recovery is to find who is locking the table/member and kill their job and end/restart CS.
I couldn't figure out what was causing this to happen for the longest time.
    Huge problem.

The CAAC has reviewed this requirement and recommends that IBM view this as a high priority requirement that is important to be addressed. The locks remaining can severely interfere with production processes. It is not intuitive that they remain locked since STRSQL does not behave like this.

Background: The COMMON Americas Advisory Council (CAAC) members have a broad range of experience in working with small and medium-sized IBM i customers. CAAC has a key role in working with IBM i development to help assess the value and impact of individual RFEs on the broader IBM i community, and has therefore reviewed your RFE.

For more information about CAAC, see www.common.org/caac

For more details about CAAC's role with RFEs, see http://www.ibmsystemsmag.com/Blogs/i-Can/May-2017/COMMON-Americas-Advisory-Council-%28CAAC%29-and-RFEs/

IBM has received this requirement and is evaluating it. A response will be provided when evaluation is complete.

Have you tried the the feature "for UR" for "uncommitted read" or change the commit option to no commit.

Think about this question: How can the system know that you ar not using data from the "sql read" to do an update?

If you change your RFE to say "... where there is nor journaling on the table" i think it will be a even more propper RFE
