Better security for password validation program

Hello,

I'am wondering if that would not be possible to secure a little bit better the validation program that can be setup in the QPWDVLDPGM and/or in the "QIBM_QSY_VLD_PASSWRD » format VLDP0100 and VLDP0200 exit points. I understand that just the IBM i security apply to those objects. So, due to the criticality of those items (easy to collect in clear all passwords and user ids on the system with proper program code) I believe it could be a good idea to secure them with an additional security layer. To do that I'am thinking of the way the system values are secured with STRSST. A similar mecanism could be applied to the QIBM_QSY_VLD_PASSWRD exit points and also to the customer created program. If activated you would need to have *ALLOBJ rights from IBM i point of view but also rights to do it from STRSST. So you would need the proper passwords and rights from STRSST to be able to change the above items.

Thank you.

Best regards.

OD

Use Case:

Customer who created password validation program but also a way to secure better the QIBM_QSY_VLD_PASSWRD exit points for all IBM i customers.

A new SST security attribute has been added that can be used to control if new exit programs can be added to, or existing exit programs can be removed from, the QIBM_QSY_VLD_PASSWRD and QIBM_QSY_CHK_PASSWRD exit points. The default is to allow exit programs to be added to or removed from the exit points. The attribute can be changed using the Change SST Security Attributes(CHGSSTSECA) command or using the Start System Service Tools (STRSST) command and taking option 7. Work with system security.

IBM will use this request as input to planning but no commitment is made or implied. This request will be updated in the future if IBM implements it. IBM will use votes and comments from others in the community to help prioritize this request.

The COMMON Europe Advisory Council (CEAC) has reviewed this requirement and recommends that IBM view this as a MEDIUM priority requirement that should be addressed.

Background: The CEAC members have a broad range of experience in working with small and medium-sized IBM i customers. CEAC has a crucial role in working with IBM i development to help assess the value and impact of individual RFEs on the broader IBM i community and has therefore reviewed your RFE.

To find out how CEAC help to shape the future of IBM i, see CEAC @ ibm.biz/BdYSYj and the article "The Five Hottest IBM i RFEs Of The Quarter" at ibm.biz/BdYSZT

    Thanks Olivier.
Although you have attributed a medium priority, this RFE is of HIGH importance for enforcing passwords security. CISO's and organizations will have major problems to justify this major security breach to auditors.
