IBM Power Ideas Portal

This portal is to open public enhancement requests against IBM Power Systems products, including IBM i. To view all of your ideas submitted to IBM, create and manage groups of Ideas, or create an idea explicitly set to be either visible by all (public) or visible only to you and IBM (private), use the IBM Unified Ideas Portal (https://ideas.ibm.com).

Shape the future of IBM!

Option to exclude comment lines when debugging

This is a request to add functionality to all debuggers on the system to allow the exclusion or the ability to switch to having comment statements shown or not shown.

Use Case:

Comment lines are shown and in many cases, it is difficult to identify comment lines from actual code. So when debugging programs, it is easy to make mistakes in looking at comment lines and not realizing that they are comments.

As a result, fellow programmers do not want to document their code.

IBM does not intend to provide a solution to this request at this time, so it is being closed.

The CAAC has reviewed this requirement and recommends that IBM not implement this request. This is not likely to advance the process of debugging -- comments are usually easy to distinguish from code.

Background: The COMMON Americas Advisory Council (CAAC) members have a broad range of experience in working with small and medium-sized IBM i customers. CAAC has a key role in working with IBM i development to help assess the value and impact of individual RFEs on the broader IBM i community, and has therefore reviewed your RFE.

    Component - Core OS
    Operating system - IBM i
    Source - Client

Using RDI debugger it is not hard to notice the difference.

However, if you need to know for certain (in the system debugger) if the line is a comment or not, try pressing F6 to set a breakpoint on a line. If it is a comment the debugger will set the breakpoint to the next executable.

Funny reason not wanting to document your code :-)

I thought comment was "written text" (which is obvious that it won't be processed)... not code put in comments (which you shouldn't have... if you've a change management system).
