Modern ILE C++ Compiler (at least C++11) and future support

We need a modern ILE C++ compiler (at least C++11). Furthermore this compiler should be frequently updated within a IBM i release. In order to be able to provide our software long term for the IBM i platform, we would also need support for newer versions of the C++ standard. The current ILE C++ 7.4 compiler does only support a subset of the C++11 standard.


Use Case:

We are in the process to modernize our application and are changing from ILE Cobol to ILE C++. In order to program modern C++ and to be able to use current versions of 3rd party libraries (e.g. boost) we need an adequate C++ compiler.

    The CAAC has reviewed this Idea and recommends that IBM view this as a high priority requirement that is important to be addressed. Although this may not apply directly to many Small/Medium IBM i clients, we recognize that it is essential for those who program in C++ on IBM i.


    Background: The COMMON Americas Advisory Council (CAAC) members have a broad range of experience in working with small and medium-sized IBM i customers. CAAC has a key role in working with IBM i development to help assess the value and impact of individual Ideas on the broader IBM i community, and has therefore reviewed your Idea.

    The CEAC has reviewed this requirement and recommends that IBM view this as a HIGH priority requirement that is important to address.

    I second this RFE. Lack of support for modern C++ standards is a major problem for software vendors who port their software to multiple platforms. The original author mentions the Boost libraries. I would like to add another popular and important C++ library where the current release cannot be built on IBM i: International Components for Unicode - ICU.
