Provide better support for PASE compiler tools in an IDE

I am building a lot of programs and tools for IBM i using the C language. At this point I am build a lot of tools that run on a Linux Partition and communicate with IBM i over a TCP/IP connection. The development environment I use for IBM i is RDi, I am having to use VS Code for the Linux development as RDi does not support building on a remote Linux Partition. I would like to add PASE based utilities to remove some of the remote Linux programs and have them run on the IBM i in PASE. IBM has provided a large number of open source components including the gcc compiler and a lot of valuable libraries for such things as XML and JSON parsing plus the ability to use cURL for remote web based requests etc. I would like to be able to develop these tools using modern development tools and not have to resort to command line utilities and hacks to get an IDE to send the relevant commands to carry out the builds. This would be an ideal addition to the current IBM i development tool RDi as it already has the ability to communicate with the IFS etc and I am using it daily for Native IBM i development work.

Idea priority Urgent

The CAAC has reviewed this requirement and recommends that IBM view this as a high priority requirement that is important to be addressed. Having Open source capabilities on the IBM i in PASE would be more appealing with a modern set of tools to develop with -- Merlin does provide this, but it is still worthwhile to add to RDi due its wide adoption.

Background: The COMMON Americas Advisory Council (CAAC) members have a broad range of experience in working with small and medium-sized IBM i customers. CAAC has a key role in working with IBM i development to help assess the value and impact of individual RFEs on the broader IBM i community, and has therefore reviewed your RFE.
