Hardware-Tape-Encryption

According to https://www.ibm.com/docs/api/v1/content/ssw_ibm_i_74/rzam4/rzam4tapeencryption.htm the only way to encrypt tape backups without *KLM is to use software encryption.
SW encryption is OK, but it uses precious CPU time and usually prolongs the backup window.

(Smaller) IBM i customers rarely want to provide a more complex GKLM infrastructure.

Request: On the other hand, TSM (Spectrum Protect) uses the “application managed [hardware] encryption“ of Tapes successfully nearly since LTO supports this.

Can this also be adapted to BRMS?

Well, implementing https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MatrixSSL like it seems being used in Linux on Power https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1002/cpe.6101 seems even more promissing and versatile to me. Thanks!

The BRMS team does not intend to provide a solution to this request at this time, so it is being closed. There is already a working Software Encryption solution and the changes necessary to have BRMS support IBM i based application to generate and manage the keys do not align with the current BRMS strategic direction. In addition, the Base Operating System team continues to look at ways to improve the performance of the existing Software Encryption solution in ways that are different from your specific Idea.

The BRMS team has received the requirement and is evaluating it. The BRMS team will provide a response after evaluation is complete.
