Bankable IBM i license transfers

When upgrading hardware, many customers want to transfer existing IBM i entitlements from their old servers. However, the migration process for all workloads can take some time - a 12-month migration project is not unusual. At the same time, there is still a desire to see all project costs (new hardware and license transfers) as a single spend, so raising new purchase orders for each license transfer during the project is not ideal (and requires additional admin work). Temporary licenses can fill the gap, but again require additional administrative work, and may not last long enough if projects are delayed. The suggestion is to allow customers to purchase all license transfers at the same time as the new hardware, but then 'bank' them, and only apply those transfers when they are ready to migrate the applicable workloads. There are already many very good self-service tools in the Entitled Systems Support (ESS) website, so this could be an addition to that capability.

Given the move towards subscription only licensing for the IBM i Operating System, it is likely that this problem will disappear eventually as customers move away from the non-expiring licenses that require this transfer process.
