Provide a V5R4M5 Virtual Machine Environment

There are a huge number of customers locked onto V5R4 due to the change in the LIC that cannot upgrade to new versions. MANY of these customers are stuck with no vendor support and have no capability of moving to anything newer than POWER6 hardware. These customers are in large part spending effort, time and money moving away from the IBM i and Power platforms. Providing this environment would enable these customers to migrate to newer, faster, more reliable hardware and remain IBM customers.

I didn't say: "Enable V5R4M5 on current hardware." You missed the point entirely.

I suggested an emulation, similar to what was done for the System/36 with the 36 Machine environment that existed on early V4 releases. I also didn't suggest that V5R4M5 itself would be placed into a supported state. Only that the AS IS current software be able to be run in a virtual environment on a newer machine which the customer must pay IBM for on an O/S that the customer my pay IBM for and also, that this environment would NOT be free but instead a chargeable feature.

Without this, those customers are paying IBM $0. They are also actively working to move off IBM i and Power as they are held hostage by software vendors who want truly astronomical piles of money to upgrade their software.

Enabling V5R4M5 on current hardware and bringing it into a supportable state is a significant challenge that at this point time we have chosen not to pursue.
